AMHR LLC is a veteran-owned practice dedicated to enhancing brain and mental health through non-invasive neurofeedback/EEG training and evidence-based counseling. We help individuals strengthen resilience and emotional well-being to navigate life’s challenges and support businesses and organizations in developing their human capital for a healthier, more effective workforce.
Our ideal clients are individuals, members of the military community, small business owners, and close-
knit workgroups who value personal growth, resilience, and connection. Many face high stress, transitions,
or performance demands that challenge their mental and emotional balance. At AMHR LLC, we understand these unique needs and provide neurofeedback/EEG training and holistic counseling to help them restore focus, strengthen emotional health, and build thriving, purpose-driven lives and workplaces.
We provide integrated counseling, coaching, and assessment services designed to help individuals, couples, families, and organizations develop stronger emotional intelligence, healthier relationships, and lasting self-regulation. Through a combination of evidence-based counseling, neurofeedback brain training, anger management coaching, relationship and premarital guidance, and validated emotional intelligence assessments, AMHR equips clients with practical tools to manage stress, resolve conflict, improve communication, and build resilient patterns of thinking and behavior that support personal and professional growth.
Anger management counseling helps individuals understand the root of their anger and develop healthier ways to regulate and express it. Through practical strategies and guided reflection, clients build stronger conflict resolution skills that allow them to problem solve rather than react through attack, withdrawal, or retaliation. As emotional regulation improves, people think more clearly, make better decisions, and strengthen their relationships, health, and overall well-being.
Premarital counseling helps couples build clarity, communication skills, and shared expectations before entering marriage, which is associated with stronger relationships and a lower risk of early divorce. It also helps couples understand marriage as a covenant rooted in commitment, sacrifice, and steadfast love rather than a relationship based solely on mutual satisfaction. Research shows that couples who complete structured premarital counseling report higher relationship satisfaction and have significantly lower divorce rates, with some studies suggesting about a 30–31 percent reduction in divorce risk.
The EQ-i 2.0 provides a well-validated and practical assessment of emotional and social functioning across clinical, relationship coaching, and organizational settings. It helps individuals gain deeper self-awareness by identifying emotional triggers, habitual responses, strengths, and areas for growth that influence personal and professional performance. Organizations also use the EQ-i 2.0 to support talent development, leadership growth, and hiring decisions by integrating emotional intelligence with technical and professional competencies.
James A. Johnson Jr.’s journey from Navy Chaplain to founder of Anger Management Hampton Roads, LLC (AMHR) grew out of decades of serving service members, families, and communities under high stress, where he saw firsthand how unaddressed anger, trauma, and emotional pain could fracture lives and relationships. Drawing on his experience as the Chaplain Corps’ Subject Matter Expert in Emotional Intelligence and his deployments with the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, he developed a deep conviction that people need practical tools, not just insight, to build resilience and regulate their emotions.
To answer that need, he pursued advanced training in theology, marriage and family counseling, trauma, and clinical neurotherapy, steadily shaping a unique approach that blends faith, neuroscience, and evidence-based counseling to promote holistic well-being. As CEO and Executive Director of AMHR, he now channels that background into helping individuals, families, and organizations transform conflict into growth, strengthen communication, and cultivate healthier patterns of thinking, feeling, and relating.
Rooted in his Minneapolis upbringing and refined through years of pastoral ministry and community service in Hampton Roads, Rev. Johnson’s founder story is ultimately about service. It is about walking with people through life’s hardest seasons and equipping them with the skills, insight, and support they need to heal, grow, and thrive with purpose.
